Limelight Casinos: Poker: Rules |
The basic rules of the card
game poker are that players bet on the value of the combination of cards
in their ownership. They place their bet in a central pot with the bets of
other players. The winner of the game is the player with the highest value
of cards. A card hierarchy is well known and used to determine the winner.
Another way to win is if a player remains after everyone folds.
Each different type of poker plays with these basic rules. From this point
forward things can get pretty exciting:
In draw poker players may exchange cards in their hands for alternate
cards from the dealer. Draw poker is more commonly played with only five
cards in a hand. There is a version of poker where you are not allowed to
exchange any of your cards this is called five card stud.
Speaking of stud poker games, the most popular version is seven card stud
which is played exactly the same as five card stud except there are more
betting rounds and when making a hand you use only five out of the seven
cards.
From this point poker games begin to use community cards such as, Texas
hold’em, Omaha hold’em and a few more. In these games players a dealt a
few cards, which are called hole cards, face down. These cards are to be
kept private. Next the dealer continues to deal some cards face up in the
center of the table. These cards are called community cards and are meant
to be used by all the players. A few rounds of betting ensue while the
dealer will proceed dealing new community cards.
... to be continued...
