Limelight Casinos: News
Germany Feeling the Bite |
Austria’s Bwin Interactive Entertainment has won a battle over Germany
when a court in Karlsruhe ruled in favor of overturning a law the German
Government had made in the beginning of the new year. Bwin Interactive
Entertainment will be able to keep accepting bets from the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.
Bwin Interactive Entertainment has around two million customers in Germany
with several hundred thousand in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Germany’s third
largest state had a regional ban that limited certain types of gambling
online, however it is technically not enforceable. Now that the ruling was
in favor of Bwin Interactive Entertainment’s beliefs this could mean a
return to gambling on the internet in Germany. This decision follows the
European Gaming and Betting Association’s decision to file an official
complaint with the European Commission against the German accord outlawing
betting on the internet throughout the nation’s sixteen states. The
European Union principles are being attacked by the German Government, in
order to ensure that the principles are respected the European Gaming and
Betting Association is determined to make proud the European betting
groups it represents.
Of course we should not think Germany is going to take this ruling lying
down. An appeal will undoubtedly be made from the German government to the
administrative court in Mannheim, Germany. Germany is afraid of the
uncontrollable nature of gambling on the internet.
The opposition against Germany is strong. Sigrid Ligne, Secretary General
for the Association makes the point of focusing on land based offline
gambling that is being promoted in Germany. Calling live gambling okay but
online gambling wrong is the thinking of a hypocrite.
